8 Ways You Can Honor Senior Pets

Our senior pets are our cherished and beloved family members. Not only have they been our best friends and constant companions for years, but they have also endured the different trials and tribulations of life. If you have a senior pet, and you are wondering what you can do to make his or her last years the best you can, then this article is for you!

1. Take it slow.

Senior pets might still enjoy the same activities they did when they were younger, but they require extra patience and gentleness. For example, let them take their time on walks, and play with them extra gently if they crave that. They also require more breaks, naps, and slowing down.

2. Give them extra love.

One of the most important things for senior pets is affection! In fact, many pet parents attribute their senior animals’ extra long lives to the surplus of love and care they received. So, never underestimate how happy simple pets, cuddles, love, and kind words can make an elderly animal!

3. Quality time is very important.

One-on-one time with their favorite person or people goes a long way. This can be as simple as just sitting or napping together! Spending time with senior pets is always a good idea, as you never know how much time you have left with them.

4. Celebrate special moments.

Whether it’s their birthday, a new achievement, or an anniversary, senior pets deserve to be celebrated! This is a wonderful way to show your gratitude and make your pet feel special after so many years.

5. Provide them with  their favorite things.

Whether it’s a favorite treat, toy, or place, make sure to include it in your senior pets’ schedule! This will make each and every day more happy and special for them.

6. Offer them comfort and help.

Senior pets often have weaker joints and sore bodies. Blankets and soft beds will feel heavenly and are often necessities in the later stages of our pets’ lives. Consider also assisting elderly animals in reaching high places, on stairs, or other difficult terrain.

7. Never take a moment for granted.

We cannot emphasize this point enough for senior pets. Enjoy every second you have together and cherish your best friend. You do not know how long he or she has left on Earth. So, live each day together as if it will be your last.

8. Learn from them.

Last but not least, senior pets can teach us so much about life. We can also learn so many valuable lessons from them. So, slow down, listen to, and observe your elderly companion. The GMAP Team  has learned so many important lessons from the GMAP senior residents !
