Why is Mental Stimulation for Dogs So Important?
We always mention the importance of physical exercise for dogs, but did you know that mental stimulation for dogs is also incredibly important? In fact, dogs thrive with an ideal balance of physical and mental stimulation. In this article, we will show you why training any dog’s brain is a must.
Here are some reasons mental stimulation for dogs is a must:
Many dogs misbehave due to boredom
Dogs are very intelligent, naturally obedient and eager-to-please creatures. However, no mental stimulation for dogs, such as leaving them tied or locked up in the same place, which is extreme animal abuse, should never be done to any living creature ever.
Psychological problems can arise
A lack of mental stimulation for dogs can lead to severe depression and frustration. This has such negative impacts on a dog’s psychological and mental health. Abuse is not limited to physical actions only; psychological abuse is also abuse!
A mentally stimulated dog will be sharper
This is to be expected, but training a dog’s brain makes them smarter! Mental stimulation for dogs means that they will be more responsive, alert, and better at problem solving. All of these are excellent qualities for a canine companion.
Physical and mental activities can be combined
It doesn’t have to take all your energy and time! Mental stimulation for dogs can be intuitively added to your routine. For example, you could try taking your dog to a new place on his/her walk or introducing a new and interesting toy!
Here’s how we keep our dogs mentally stimulated at GMAP:
Puzzle feeders
Puzzle feeders are a great low-effort option for mental stimulation for dogs! All you have to do is place their food inside, and the dog will have to figure out how to get the food out by solving the “puzzle”! See for yourself how much the GMAP dogs enjoyed this activity!
Kongs
Much like puzzle feeders, kongs are another food-related and low-effort toy used for mental stimulation for dogs! A kong is a rubber toy in which food can be placed. Enticed by the smell and prospect of food, a dog will be busy with this toy for hours! A few of our beloved dogs tested out this toy and they gave pawesome reviews!
Training
Training is another amazing method for mental stimulation for dogs! A trained dog is not only more obedient, but also more entertained and forced to use his/ her brain in order to master commands and tricks. There are so many benefits to training, and at GMAP, we collaborated with professional dog trainer K9 Amir and showered our pups with all of them (as well as with hugs and kisses)!
Toys
Besides the food-based toys we covered earlier, different types of toys can also provide mental stimulation for dogs! The best things is that you can create an amazing new dog toy for your pooch for free! You can either DIY or buy! Create or seek out new textures, colors, and shapes. Dogs love new experiences, and a good toy is guaranteed to keep them entertained for hours, whether through mutual or solo play sessions.
Walks
Walking is great mental stimulation for dogs since it can expose them to new sights, smells, sounds, tastes, and experiences in general! At GMAP, we always make sure to give our dogs daily walks even though they are already cage-free. Taking them to new spots or just hiking on our beautiful waterfall trail, you can see them get excited and happy!
Finally, always remember that dogs are like children!
What we mean by this, is that the same way mental stimulation for a child is non-negotiable, so is mental stimulation for dogs! Dogs are living, sentient beings, with their own brains, thoughts, and feelings. Taking care of a dog is a huge responsibility and should not be taken lightly. So, let’s work together to ensure that no dog is left locked up, tied, or under-stimulated! Hopefully you have gotten some ideas to keep your dogs or others entertained, healthy, and happy!
