Why Adopting A Senior Dog Might Be the Best Decision You Ever Make

When most people think of adopting a shelter dog, they usually default to puppies or younger dogs. Did you know that there are a bunch of overlooked older GMAP residents eagerly awaiting your love? If you do not consider adopting a senior dog, then you are sorely missing out, and we will tell you exactly why! Let’s start!

1. Senior dogs are so mellow

Older dogs are naturally calmer and more quiet. This doesn’t mean that they don’t enjoy activity or play time, however! It just means that your experiences with a senior dog will be more relaxing, calm, and meditative.

2. A senior dog requires less maintenance

Barring any medications or special care needing to be administered, just like a senior dog needs less play or physical activity, he or she will also need less of everything else! An older dog is generally just happy to sleep and chill while being loved!

3. They are the sweetest

You might be surprised at how much love and affection you will receive from a senior dog! From our experience, they adore kisses, cuddles, and belly rubs! They will also gladly reciprocate!

4. They enjoy the simple things and don’t discriminate

Senior dogs don’t need fancy toys to be happy! They are content with just a warm and loving home. A senior dog will value love, affection, kindness, and warmth over anything else, and these are things everyone can provide!

5. They are gentle

Since a senior dog is less hyper and active than a younger dog, he or she will be more gentle as a result. From our experience, senior dogs are great with kids and other animals!

6. You can learn from them

A senior dog has lived a long and eventful life, and has many lessons to bestow upon his or her humans! Among the most important lessons we have learned from our seniors at GMAP are: Patience, the art of meditation, the best ways to nap (in the sun, preferably), and how to love unconditionally!

7. You will be giving a wonderful soul the best last years of life

A senior dog deserves to live his or her last years in complete peace and happiness, right? You can give this wonderful gift to one of our seniors by fostering or adopting! Meet some of our seniors below and see for yourself how beautiful, sweet, and amazing  they are!

Meet the GMAP seniors!

Bear

Bear is the definition of “chill”. He enjoys being cuddled, relaxing, napping, and being brushed. He also loves special attention and will gaze lovingly into your eyes, always asking for more.

Bloomy

Bloomy lost her leg and her sight in one eye when she was rescued, but that does not stop her from being one of the most sociable and affectionate dogs at GMAP! A visitors’ favorite, she loves belly rubs, quality time, cuddles, pets, and relaxing.

Charlie

Charlie is the definition of a sweetheart! He loves belly rubs, pets, cuddles, and really, any kind of love. He is very gentle and calm, always smiling at visitors and staff alike.

Honey

Honey is a social butterfly! She loves playing and attention. She will play gently with you and demand affection. She also loves giving smiles and kisses!

Maggie

Maggie is calm and thoughtful. She is gentle and affectionate, but also loves spending time alone. She is one of our sweetest residents.

Magnum

Magnum is the sweetest boy! If you spend too long with him, you might even get a toothache! His favorite things are cuddles and pets. He will rest his head on your lap and smile at you all the while.

Mali

Mali is calm, gentle, and affectionate. She is quite a charmer, and it is impossible not to fall in love with her after meeting her!

Puggle

Puggle may be our smallest senior in size, but his personality is so large that you will hardly notice! He loves getting in the middle of everything going on at the shelter and supervising everyone! He is nicknamed the “mayor of the shelter” for a reason!
